Product Comparison: Fizzing Dino Eggs

My daughter has been pretty dino-obsessed lately and I know she isn't alone. Every kids' store seems to have dinosaur clothes and toys galore, so I'm pretty sure it's a popular trend.

One of my daughter's absolute favorite things is to "hatch" baby dinosaurs. I stumbled on some fizzing dinosaur eggs at one of my favorite local stores. We did it once for fun and she was so excited about it, I started using it as an occasional potty training reward. They started getting pricey though... Which is why I turned to Amazon to see if I could find a less expensive alternative. After trying three different types of fizzing dinosaur eggs, I thought it might be helpful to other parents to sum up my reviews here.

Fizz 'n' Surprise Dinosaur Egg - $8 to $9

This was the first kind we purchased! These are unique in two significant ways. For one thing, there are 28 different kinds of dinosaurs that you might hatch and you don't know which one you're going to get. It's a surprise every time. This can be a good thing or a bad thing, I guess. We did end up with quite a few repeats, but it did not seem to phase my kids. I think a lot of kids would be excited about the surprise element. The other way that these guys are different is that the dinosaur toys come apart so you can mix and match parts and create your own dinosaur hybrids. The heads, tails, arms, and legs can all be switched between the different toys or positioned/posed in different stances. Similar to the surprise element, this could be a good thing or a bad thing. It adds an extra fun activity element to the toys, but it also means sometimes heads can go missing or you might have some extra small choking hazards laying around. Another noteworthy item about this brand is that technically they are NOT bath fizzies. They are meant to be "hatched" in a bucket or bowl. I am not convinced they'd cause big harm in a bathtub full of water, but I'm certainly not credentialed in such things. It was never an issue for us because we do all of our hatching in buckets or in the shower anyway.

PROS: Highest quality toys, 28 different possible dinosaurs, "Surprise" dinos, Pose-able & mixable toys
CONS: Not made for the bath, Toys come apart into small pieces, No sure way to make sure you buy a new type of dinosaur

Dino Fizz Hatching Egg - $6 to $7

Listen, I'm going to cut to chase right away. These suck. Don't bother. Yes, they are a couple dollars cheaper than the Fizz 'n' Surprise kind, but the "toys" can barely be called toys. The dinosaur in the middle of the hatching egg is a teeny tiny, flat little dinosaur. Imagine one of those puffy stickers you can buy. It's basically like that. It does come in three varieties and you can choose if you want the T-Rex, Stegosaurus, or Aptosaurus. But when the "toy" is so flimsy, it just doesn't seem worth it to me.

PROS: You can choose which dinosaur you want, Approved for the bath
CONS: Toy is a joke, Only 3 varieties available

Appolis Bath Bombs With Dinosaur Toy Surprises - Six Pack for $19 ($3.17 each)

I was pretty unsure of these... Probably because they are much more like bath bombs than eggs. They are scented and wrapped all pretty in tissue paper and have a very spa-bath-bomb thing going. That said, I was super happy with these! They are bath safe and have a nice, light scent. When the bath bomb dissolves you are left with a little plastic container that has a tiny cute dinosaur toy in it. They are super cute little baby dinosaur toys and my daughter was thrilled with them. They are especially small, so I would call them choking hazards for any kids young enough to try and swallow them. There are six different kinds of little dinos in this six-pack. So far we have only "hatched" three of them but the dinos have all been cute. Not as detailed as the Fizz 'n' Surprise toys but still cute and recognizable as different species. My kid quickly matched them up with her dollar store dinos to create little dinosaur families. Overall, I'd say this 6-pack would make a really great gift for a dinosaur & bath loving child.

PROS: Bath safe, Scented, Cute 3D toys, 6 varieties, Economical
CONS: Toys are very small

Final thoughts/recommendations:

For a special occasion or small gift (stocking stuffer, Easter basket, etc.), the first type of fizzing egg I bought was the best (the Fizz 'n' Surprise Egg). The toy was legit and I love that there are so many you can collect. At $8 or $9 they aren't cheap but I'd rather spend $9 on a decent toy than $6 on a small piece of trash. That said, the 6-pack of bath bombs would make a great $20 gift for the right kid. You get 6 tiny dinos as well as 6 decent bath bombs that kids would enjoy. Don't waste your time or money on the "Dino Fizz" ones. Which, I just saw are being stocked at my local Schnuck's grocery store... So if you're local, don't fall for that impulse purchase! Head to Sweet Be's in Des Peres and get the Fizz 'n' Surprise egg for better quality and to support a local family. If you're not local, there is always Amazon.
